Wellesley's McPhee Named NEWMAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year;
Blue Place Four on All-Conference Team
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2009 Lacrosse post-season awards on Tuesday. Highlighting the awards for the Blue, head coach Julia McPhee was named the NEWMAC Coach of the Year, while Wellesley placed four on the All-Conference team.
Named to the first-team for Wellesley was junior Loretta White (Northampton, MA) while juniors Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) and Molly Morrow (Bow, NH), and first-year Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) were all named to the second team.
White finished the season with 19 goals and seven assists for 26 points. Relied on to mark the opposing team's top offensive threat, the junior racked up 19 caused turnovers on the year while also recording 28 ground balls and 47 draw controls.
Holland had a breakout season in 2009, amassing 64 goals, the most for a Wellesley player in at least five years. She also recorded nine assists, to finish with 74 total points (second on the team, fourth in the conference), while also tallying a team-high six game-winners.
Morrow was the team's leading playmaker, as well as Wellesley's leading scorer. She led the team in assists (28), which ranked her second in the conference, as well as points (75), which ranked her third in the conference. She also recorded 46 draw controls and 21 ground balls on the year.
Roy had a spectatcular rookie campaign for Wellesley. She finished the year with 43 goals and 15 assists for 68 total points. The first-year also recorded team-highs of 50 draw controls and 33 ground balls.
McPhee, in her fourth season at the helm of the Blue, receives her first Coach of the Year honor. She's compiled an overall record of 40-31 with two NEWMAC Championship game appearances. In 2006, McPhee coached the team to only the fourth 13-win season in program history.
The 2009 Wellesley lacrosse team finished with an overall record of 9-8. The Blue advanced to the NEWMAC Semifinals before falling to #1 seed and eventual tournament champion, Babson.
