Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to Nationally Ranked Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The nationally-ranked Babson College women’s lacrosse team extended its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) winning streak to 20 games on Tuesday night, as the #13 Beavers defeated visiting archrival Wellesley College, 21-3, under the lights at MacDowell Field.
With its 16th straight regular season conference win and 20th straight overall in league play, Babson improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC. Meanwhile, Wellesley suffered its first conference defeat of the season, falling to 7-5 overall and 2-1 against league foes.
Babson dominated the contest from the outset, netting four straight goals and seven of the game’s first eight strikes to build an early 7-1 advantage. Senior tri-captain Lindsay Bucci (Medford, Mass.) tallied all three of her goals during the run, while junior Anna Collins (Winchester, Mass.) added two others. Wellesley sophomore Jenny Holland (Bethesda, Md.) scored her second goal of the game to make it 7-2 with 13 minutes left in the first half, but the Beavers scored seven straight to close the period and then outscored the Blue 7-1 in the second frame to cruise to the 21-3 victory.
Collins finished with a team-high five goals in the win, while senior tri-captain Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, Mass.) totaled three goals and four assists to pace all player with seven points. Bucci dished out an assist to go with her three scores, junior Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.) also netted three goals, and senior tri-captain Jess Parker (Cataumet, Mass.) chipped in with two goals and a game-high four groundballs. Sophomore goalie Sarah Macary (Woodbury, Conn.) finished with five saves in net while also recording the first assist of her collegiate career on a length-of-the-field pass to Godfrey in the second half.
Holland scored all three goals in defeat for Wellesley, while sophomore goalkeeper Mary Mattia (Atlanta, Ga.) turned away five shots in net.
