Roy Nets Four Goals in Loss to MIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite a late charge by Wellesley College, the MIT women’s lacrosse team fought off the visiting Blue for a 14-11 victory in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular-season finale on Saturday. Casey Flynn tallied a game-high six points on five goals and an assist for the Engineers (12-4, 4-2 NEWMAC). Her team-leading scoring performance raised her season total to 52 goals, which eclipsed the previous Institute record of 50 set by Debbie Cheng in 2001. The Engineers posted five unanswered goals to go ahead at the 14:51 mark. Roy responded with a free-position shot and a solo effort to even the contest at five just over two minutes later. MIT countered with a 5-1 run which resulted in a 10-6 advantage at the break.
Wellesley’s Briana Roberge narrowed the gap with an unassisted marker early in the second stanza, but the Cardinal and Gray recorded three consecutive goals to increase its margin to six (13-7) with 21:02 on the clock. The Blue continued to attack, mounting a 4-1 run which cut its deficit in half with 3:44 left to play. Loretta White and Jenny Holland each scored twice to bring Wellesley within three (14-11). The remainder of the game was a defensive battle as the Engineers held on for the win.
