Wellesley Falls to Montclair State

Montclair, NJ – Despite grabbing an early lead, Wellesley College fell to Montclair State, 16-10, at Sprague Field on Thursday afternoon.

Wellesley scored the first two goals of the game as Kayla Bolton (Beverly Hills, MI) and Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) connected in the first 5:47 of the contest. Montclair State would answer on goals by Henderson and Fallon 19 seconds apart, but Bolton’s second goal with 20:51 to play put the Blue back in front 3-2.  Fallon then began a three-goal run by Montclair , including a Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, NJ) that gave the Red Hawks a 5-3 lead with 15:03 to play.

Wellesley's Jenny Hollan (Bethesda, MD) cut the deficit back to a goal two minutes later, but Montclair took control with a five-goal spur en route to an 11-5 halftime lead. Carla Davis (Decatur, GA) sparked the run and goals by Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ) and Fallon made the score 7-4 with 8:47 left before halftime. Following Fallon’s second of the game, Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ) and Henderson scored 39 second apart as Montclair led 10-4 with four minutes o go. Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, MD) stopped the MSU run with a goal with 1:57 to go, but Henderson found the back of the net with 40 seconds to play as Montclair went into the break up six.

In the second half, MacPhee’s goal with 25:10 remaining put Montclair ahead 13-6 but Wellesley made a run scoring three straight, all by Roy with the final coming with 15:02 to go that cut the Montclair State lead to 13-9. Fallon ended the threat with a goal as Montclair would net two of the final three tallies.

Freshman goalkeeper Tracey Manella (Haworth, NJ) stopped 12 shots for MSU, which outshot Wellesley, 38-27 in the game. MacPhee added five ground balls, five draws and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) scored three times for the Blue while first-year Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) found the back of the net twice for Wellesley.  Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) made 14 saves for Wellesley. Roy collected five draws and three ground balls.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 28 as the Red Hawks open up Skyline Conference play with a home contest against New York Maritime at 1:00 pm.
