Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to NEWMAC-Rival Springfield
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Jenn Zubkus (Dover, NH) and Heather Dobson (Longmeadow, MA) each tallied five goals to lead the Springfield College lacrosse team to a 19-11 victory over Wellesley on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Pride to 9-4 overall with a 4-1 mark in the NEWMAC while the Blue fall to 7-6, 2-2 in conference play.
Zubkus gave Springfield an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals in the first two minutes to play. Wellesley got one back at 27:12 when Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) made a free position shot, to cut the lead to 2-1. From that point, the teams traded goals, scoring three each, until Springfield pulled ahead with three straight goals from Heather Dobson, Kaeleigh Lannan (Derry, NH) and Alexandra Bazzano (Newington, CT) to the Pride a 7-3 lead with 9:31 to play in the half.
Wellesley's Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) and Briana Roberge (Bow, NH) then sandwiched goals around a Springfield score to narrow the gap to 8-5 with 6:28 remaining in the period. However, Springfield tallied three of the final four goals of the half to take an 11-6 advantage into halftime.
Springfield put the game out of reach early in the second half when, after a Loretta White (Nothampton) score for Wellesley, the Pride recorded four straight to go up 15-7 with 20 minutes to play. Springfield picked up two goals each from Zubkus and Dobson during the run.
Wellesley answered back, with two in a row from Holland, both assisted by Morrow, to cut the lead to 15-9, but the Pride recorded four of the final six tallies to seal the 19-11 victory.
For Springfield, Zubkus and Heather Dobson led all scorers with a game-high five goals each, while Zubkus tallied three assists to finish with eight points. Rounding out the offense for the Pride, Bazzano and Erin Doolan (Blauvelt, NY) each recorded three goals while Lannan added two.
Defensively, Megan Dobson (Longmeadow, MA) led the way with four caused turnovers and three groundballs while Flores and Meghan Wisell (South Burlington, VT) also added three groundballs. Picking up the win, Lauren McAulay (Yorktown, NY) made eight saves in net for Springfield.
Wellesley's Holland picked up four goals for the Blue, while Morrow, Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) and White each scored twice. Morrow also picked up two assists to total four points on the afternoon.
Roy led the way off the draw, with a career-high seven draw controls while Katie Saylor (San Diego, CA) picked up four groundballs. In net for Wellesley, Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) turned away 10 shots.
Springfield returns to action at home on Tuesday, playing a non-conference game against Williams at 7:00pm. Wellesley entertains Wheaton, also on Tuesday, in a 4:30pm NEWMAC match-up that will serve as Senior Day for the Blue.
