Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to #13 Tufts
MEDFORD, Mass - The Wellesley lacrosse team fell to 13th-ranked Tufts University, 20-3, on Wednesday afternoon in Medford. The loss evens the Blue's record at 1-1 while Tufts improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead early in the game off goals from Jenny Abelli and Courtney Thomas. The Blue answered back when Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) found Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) who connected on a goal at the 22-minute mark to cut the Jumbos' advantage to 2-1.
Tufts scored again at 21:20 but once again, Wellesley answered with a goal. This time, Morrow netted an unassisted score with 20-minutes to play in the half that trimmed the advantage to 3-2.
From that point on, it was all Tufts, as the Jumbos outscored the Blue, 17-1 over the final 40 minutes of play.
Tufts held a 15-9 advantage in draw controls and picked up 38 ground balls to Wellesley's 20. The Jumbos defense stymied the Blue, as Tufts out shot Wellesley 36-12, including holding the Blue to just three shots in the second half.
For Tufts, Amanda Roberts led all scorers with five goals while Emily Johnson added four. Chrissie Attura picked up three scores while Lara Kozin and Maya Shoham each added three assists. Defensively, Emily Johnson had five ground balls while Courtney Thomas caused three turnovers. In goal, Sara Bloom picked up the win, playing just over 40 minutes while allowing two goals and making four saves.
Wellesley's Morrow had two points on the day with a goal and an assist, while Holland and Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) each picked up a goal. Roy also recorded team-highs with three draw controls and three ground balls. In goal for the Blue, Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) picked up nine saves.
Tufts in back in action at Colby on Saturday at noon while Wellesley takes on the University of New England at 1:00pm. Due to the recent weather, the game has been moved to Deering High School's Memorial Field in Portland, Maine.
