Roy Scores Six in Wellesley Lacrosse Win Over Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. – First-year Meredith Roy (Merrimack, NH) scored six goals to lead the Wellesley College lacrosse team to a 22-13 victory over NEWMAC-rival Wheaton College on a rainy Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley.  The win improves the Blue to 8-6 overall with a 3-2 conference mark, while the Lyons fall to 6-8, 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

Wheaton's Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT) opened the game with a goal after the first draw, giving the Lyons a 1-0 lead just :26 seconds into play.  However, the Blue answered back, with four straight goals, two from Roy and one each from Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) and Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) to take a 4-1 advantage with 23 minutes left in the half.

Wheaton got two scores back, as Tess Meyer (Concord, NH) converted on a free position attempt and Thornton scored off a Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD) assist to narrow the Wellesley lead to 4-3, with just over 22 minutes remaining in the period.

After the teams traded goals to set the score at 5-4, Wellesley took control of the game, going on an 11-3 run to close the half with a nine-point lead at 16-7.  The Blue were aided by five first half tallies from Roy and four each from Morrow and Holland.

Wellesley out-shot Wheaton 27-12 in the first period, with the Blue also holding a 13-11 advantage in draw controls.

The Lyons picked up two quick goals to start the second half, as Meyer and Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA) each scored within the first minute and a half to narrow the Wellesley margin to 16-9.  However, Wellesley scored four straight to stretch the lead to 20-9 and then withheld a late Wheaton charge to seal the 22-13 victory.

Overall, Wellesley held a 37-23 advantage in shots and an 18-10 lead in ground balls.  Wellesley also won the draw battle with 19 total to Wheaton's 18.

Offensively for the Lyons, Williams had a four-point day with two goals and two assists while Grant and Meyer each finished with two scores with Grant also added a helper.  Thornton and Abby Sherwin (Rye, NH) added two goals each while Chrissy Norberg (Winchester, MA) picked up two assists.

Also for Wheaton, Sabrina Fiori (Newton, MA) recorded a team-high five draw controls while Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA) made 13 saves in goal.

Wellesley's Roy led all scorers with six goals while Morrow and Holland added five goals each.  Loretta White (Northampton, MA) finished with three goals while Briana Roberge (Bow, NH), Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) and Kayla Bolton (Beverly Hills, MI) all scored one for the Blue. 

Defensively, Katie Saylor (San Diego, CA) and Nicole Labbee (Florence, MA) recorded four ground balls each, while Saylor also added two caused turnovers.  Roy and Morrow had five draw controls each for the Blue while Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) picked up the win in goal, making eight stops.

Both Wheaton and Wellesley will conclude the NEWMAC regular season on the road on Saturday.  Wellesley plays at MIT at 1:00pm while Wheaton plays Babson at 5:00pm.
