Morrow Scores Game-Winner in Wellesley Lacrosse Win Over Goucher
TOWSON, Md. - Wellesley College senior Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) broke a 14-14 tie with 1:52 remaining to give the Blue lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over Goucher College on Thursday afternoon. Wellesley improves to 2-4 on the season, while the Gophers even their record to 4-4.
Morrow tallied a season-high six goals, while also adding an assist for seven total points. Junior Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) posted three goals and two assists, playing in her home state for the first time as a collegiate athlete.
Wellesley jumped out to a commanding 11-4 lead in the first half of play, backed by a 19-11 advantage in shots and a 13-5 advantage in ground balls. Holland and Morrow each tallied a hat trick, while first-year Meagan Fuchs (Portland, OR) potted a pair of scores to pace the offense.
Goucher battled back in the second half, chipping away at the Wellesley advantage until a goal from Mary Lambert knotted the game at 14-14 with 5:20 to play. Morrow broke the tie with the eventual game-winner as she scored unassisted with 1:52 to play.
Other offensive contributors for the Blue were Loretta White (Northampton, MA), Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) Allison Robbins (North Bennington, VT) and Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, MD) who all posted solo scores. Elizabeth Clemetson (Freeport, ME) picked up an assist.
Defensively, Katie Saylor (San Diego, CA) caused five turnovers for Wellesley while Clemetson posted two. Fuchs had a solid all-around day with three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. In goal, Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) picked up five saves.
The Blue committed just four first-half turnovers, while adding six in the second half to compile a season low of 10 giveaways.
Wellesley returns home for a 1:00pm match-up against Drew University on Saturday.
