Wellesley College Lacrosse Downs MIT On Senior Day
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team used a 12-1 scoring run to oust New England Women's and Men's Athletics Conference (NEWMAC) rival, MIT, by a score of 14-7 on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The win improves the Blue to 3-3 in the conference, 6-9 overall, while the Engineers even their NEWMAC mark to 3-3 and go to 8-6 overall.
Wellesley's scoring run spanned over 37 minutes between the first and second halves and turned a 4-2 deficit into a 14-5 advantage.
The teams traded goals to open the game, before MIT struck for two straight scores from Stephanie Leger (Vienna, VA) and Katie Kauffman (Olney, MD). After Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) picked up a score for the Blue, MIT's Kelly Duncan (Rockville Centre, NY) countered with a goal at 11:29 to give MIT a 4-2 lead. From that point on, the game belonged to the Blue, as Wellesley's 12-1 run put the game out of reach. MIT would add two more goals late in the game, but Wellesley held on for the 14-7 win.
The Blue were led by senior Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) who scored four goals and added two assists to finish with six points on the afternoon. Holland also recorded four goals for the Blue, while first-year Meagan Fuchs (Portland, OR) added a pair of scores. Senior Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, MD) and junior Allison Robbins (North Bennington, VT) each picked up a goal and an assist, while Loretta White (Northampton, MA) and Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) added solo goals.
MIT picked up two goals each from juniors Duncan and Leger and sophomore Kauffman. Junior Erica Little (Sherborn MA) added a goal and an assist for the Engineers.
Defensively, Wellesley junior Nicole Labbee (Florence, MA) led all players with five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Fuchs added three draw controls for the Blue, while in goal junior Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) earned the win with six saves. MIT's Leger recorded four draw controls while in net, sophomore Allison Hamilos (Medfield, MA) picked up nine saves.
The Wellesley victory creates a log-jam in the NEWMAC standings, with three, possibly four teams finishing at 3-3. The NEWMAC will anounce the tie-breakers and playoff pairings later this afternoon after all regular-season contests are complete.
Before the game, Wellesley celebrated senior day, honoring the class of 2010: Katie Bourque (Penacook, NH), Caitlin Meeker, Molly Morrow, Katie Saylor (San Diego, CA) and Loretta White.
