Meeker Scores Five as Wellesley Lacrosse Opens 2010 with Victory
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College women's lacrosse team outscored Plymouth State 10-2 in the second half, to cruise to a 18-6 victory over the Panthers on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The game was the season opener for both squads.
Wellesley out-shot PSU, 30-18, while also holding a 17-8 advantage in draw controls for the game.
The Blue's potent offensive attack was led by a career-high five goals from senior Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, Md.), and three goals each from senior Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.) and junior Jenny Holland (Bethesda, Md.). First-year Allison Robbins (North Bennington, Vt.) scored a pair in her collegiate debut, while also recording three assists.
Also for Wellesley, White tallied six draw controls while Morrow notched four ground balls. Nicole Labbee (Florence, Mass.) and Morrow each caused a pair of turnovers, while Mary Mattia (Atlanta, Ga.) was solid in net for the Blue with seven saves.
Plymouth State senior Kerry D'Amroise (Lowell, Mass.) led the visitors with three goals, while sophomores Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.), Britney Chiles (North Andover, Mass.) and Jill Gerzabek (Branford, Conn.) each added solo scores.
Defensively for the Panthers, D'Ambroise led all players with five ground balls, while Chiles recorded five draw controls and three ground balls. Sophomore Nora Regan (West Hartford, Conn.) had a game-high three caused turnovers while classmate Jenn Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) added a pair.
Meeker started the afternoon's scoring, putting Wellesley ahead 1-0 with a goal just under five minutes into the game. PSU knotted it at 1-1, four minutes later, on a goal from Chiles, assisted by Kathryn Rogers (Wolfeboro, N.H.). The home team opened up a three goal lead with two scores from Robbins and one from Elizabeth Clemetson (Freeport, Maine), making it 4-1 Blue with 18 minutes remaining in the half.
The Panthers cut the lead to 4-2 on an unassisted score from Davis at 9:30, but Wellesley scored four of the half's final six goals to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
The second half was all Wellesley as the Blue opened the period with six unanswered goals. Holding a 14-4 advantage, Wellesley allowed just two Plymouth State goals over the final 13 minutes of play to cement the 18-6 victory.
The Panthers continue their seven-game road trip with a 4:00pm match-up at Worcester State on Thursday. Wellesley is off until next Saturday when the University of New England comes to town for a 1:00pm tilt.
