Wellesley Lacrosse Drops NEWMAC Contest to Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Springfield senior lacrosse players combined for nine goals in a 17-5 win over visiting Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Pride to 7-5, 3-2 in league play and snaps its three-game losing skid. The Blue drop to 4-9, 1-3.
In the victory, senior Allie Bazzano netted a game-high four goals, while classmate Jenn Zubkus added three goals and an assist. Graduate student Erin Doolan chipped in with two goals and an assist, while senior netminder Lauren McAulay registered 10 saves while allowing just five goals.
Wellesley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 8:38 of the game as Loretta White and Molly Morrow tallied unassisted goals to force a Springfield timeout.
Out of the break, Springfield scored six unanswered goals as Zubkus, Bazzano, Doolan, Meagan Dobson, and Jackie Moscardelli each found the back to provide the Pride with a 6-2 advantage.
Morrow added her second goal of the opening half with 5:56 to play to make it a 6-3 game, only to have Springfield score five goals in a 1:57 span to take complete control of the contest.
The Pride's lead grew throughout the second half until a Bazzano free-position goal closed out the scoring with 14:33 remaining, making it a 17-5 ballgame.
Dobson added three goals and an assist, while Brittany LeGuelaff recorded two goals off the bench. Moscardelli was credited with five draw controls in the victory to go along with her two goals.
Morrow finished the game with two goals and two assists to lead the Blue, while Jenny Holland scored two goals and added an assist in the loss. Mary Mattia made 12 saves between the pipes for Wellesley.
The Pride will close out the regular season with three road games beginning on Tuesday afternoon against Williams at 4:30. Wellesley continues its NEWMAC slate with a 4:30pm match-up at Wheaton on Tuesday.
