Wellesley Lacrosse Falls to #19 Stevenson
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Despite a strong second-half performance, Wellesley lacrosse fell to Stevenson University this evening, 13-6. The win lifts the Mustangs, ranked #19 nationally, to 8-2 for the season. The Blue drop to 1-4 overall.
The Mustangs jumped to an early lead, scoring two goals in the first two minutes, before Wellesley's Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) found the back of the net to put the score at 2-1. The remainder of the half, however, belonged to Stevenson, as the hosts tallied four unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead to the lockerroom.
The squads traded goals in the opening minutes of the second period, but the Mustangs followed with four straight to push the lead to 11-2 with 14:24 remaining. Wellesley made a late push, with goals from Morrow, Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD), and Meagan Fuchs (Portland, OR), but the Mustangs held on for the 13-6 win.
For Stevenson, Lisa Baker (Westminster, MD) finished with four goals and one assist. Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg, MD) and Megan Weiss (Odenton, MD) each had two goals and two assists while senior Kristyna Hnizda (Manchester, MD) had three goals. Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park, MD) was solid in the crease, recording 15 saves, including five of seven free position shots.
For Wellesley, Holland, Morrow, and Fuchs had two goals each, while Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) tallied two assists. Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) recorded seven saves in the loss.
Wellesley takes the field again on Thursday, March 25, at 4:00pm against Goucher University.
