University of New England Tops Wellesley Lacrosse
WELLESLEY, Mass. – University of New England goalie Tara Geraghty (Berrington, RI) posted 15 saves as the visiting Nor'easters topped the Wellesley College lacrosse team, 8-6, on a rain-soaked Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. UNE opens the 2010 season 1-0, while the Blue even their season mark to 1-1.
The Nor'easters jumped out to a three-goal advantage in the first 11-minutes of play as Danielle Cate (Boscawen, NH) scored twice, and Mallory Long (Lewiston, ME) added a goal and an assist. Wellesley then cut the lead to 3-2, with Jenny Holland (Bethesda, MD) finding the back of the net twice in a three-minute span. However, UNE got one back with a score from Long, as the visitors took a 4-2 advantage into the break.
Allison Robbins (North Bennington, VT) opened the second period with a score for Wellesley, cutting the UNE advantage to 4-3. The teams then traded two goals each, as Cate and Cara Cole (Norwood, MA) scored for the Nor'easters and Morrow added a pair for the Blue, setting the score to 6-5 in favor of UNE with 16 minutes remaining.
UNE then closed things out with goals from Long and Cole and strong defense from Geraghty. Wellesley's Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, MD) added a score for the Blue with 2:02 remaining, but it wasn't enough and the Nor'easters held on for the 8-6 victory.
for UNE, Cate and Long each tallied three scores, while Long also added two helpers. Liz DeGrandpre (Freeport, ME) and Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, NH) also added assists. Defensively, Geraghty was the difference-maker, facing 29 shots while posting 15 total saves. Nicolle Steel (Petersburg, NJ) and Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, CT) each recorded five ground balls while Ginny Lee (York, ME) caused three turnovers.
For Wellesley, Holland and Morrow each scored twice, with Meeker and Robbins also adding goals. Morrow tallied the Blue's only assist. Defensively, Loretta White (Northampton, MA) and Nicole Labbee (Florence, MA) each recorded five ground balls, with White also adding three caused turnovers. Alyssa Andres (East Lyme, CT) led the Blue with three draw controls, while in goal for the Blue, Mary Mattia (Atlanta, GA) posted six saves.
Wellesley continues its three-game home stand on Tuesday at 4:30pm taking on Tufts University. UNE will host their home opener on Thursday at 4:30pm against Colby.
