Wellesley Softball Opens NEWMAC Play With Two Wins Over Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) threw a one-hitter and struck out 16 in the opener and picked up win in relief in game two, leading the No. 23 Wellesley softball team to a sweep of Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader. The Blue took game one 7-0 and then won game two 2-1 in nine innings.
Harvey dominated the Bears lineup all afternoon. She struck out the first nine batters she faced and allowed just a single to Leanna Minton to lead off the fourth inning of game two. Harvey faced the minimum 21 batters in the opener as Minton was thrown out stealing.
Wellesley opened the third inning of game one with singles from Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA) and Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL). A wild pitch advanced Orloff to third where she was sacrificed home by Kara Wong (Milford, MA). The Blue increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth off of a Shawna McCreadie (Des Plaines, IL) homerun that scored Harvey.
Wellesley added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh with RBI from Harvey, McCreadie, Alex Houghtalin (Haperwoods, MI) and Amanda Tai (Melrose, MA).
Harvey was brilliant on the mound for Wellesley, throwing all seven innings and allowing only one hit. She fanned 16 batters and didn’t allow a walk, picking up her second win of the season.
Crystal Lee Coonan allowed seven earned runs and 11 hits to take the loss for Coast Guard.
In game two, Coast Guard got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Bears held the lead until the top of the fifth inning, when Tai reached on a one-out double, was advanced to third by Barbarajean Grundlock (Blackwood, NJ) and later scored on a passed ball.
In the extra frames, Wellesley scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth off of an RBI single from Meghan Sullivan (Markam, Ontario) that scored Ali Davis (Glen Ellyn, IL). In the bottom half of the inning, Harvey struck out the side to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Kristie Gola (Bordentown, NJ) got the start for Wellesley in game two, pitching seven strong innings allowing only one run on six hits while striking out three. Harvey got the win in relief, throwing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Up next, Wellesley (3-0-1, 2-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Los Angeles, California for their annual spring break trip. The Blue will take on Pacific University and Whitworth College on Monday, March 24th and play a total of eight games over the break. Coast Guard (4-10, 0-2 NEWMAC) will host Roger Williams on Tuesday with a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
