MILTON, Mass. - The Wellesley College softball team swept a doubleheader against Curry College on Wednesday afternoon in Milton, Mass. The Blue took game one 6-4 in nine innings and then won 3-0 in the second game which was halted after six innings because of darkness.
Game one featured a heavy offensive attack from the Blue, who racked up 14 total hits in the contest. Wellesley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of back-to-back solo homeruns from senior Kara Wong (Milford, MA) and sophomore Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL).
The Blue added a run in the top of the second when Amanda Tai (Melrose, MA) picked up two bases on an error and was singled home by Alex Coari (Geneva, IL). Curry rallied back to score three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, knotting the game at 3-3.
Shawna McCreadie (Des Plaines, IL) picked up an RBI in the top of the fifth inning to put Wellesley ahead 4-3 but Curry added a run in the bottom half of the frame to once again tie the score.
Neither team could manage a run until Wellesley broke through in the top of the ninth inning. With Ali Davis placed on second, Wong and Wood picked up one-out walks to load the bases. Samantha Littlejohn (Dayton, NJ) picked up an RBI with the third walk in a row for Wellesley, giving the Blue a 5-4 lead. One batter later, Meghan Sullivan (Markam, Ontario) singled to left field to give Wellesley an insurance run at 6-4.
In the bottom half of the inning, Barbarajean Grundlock (Blackwood, NJ) struck out the first two batters and then forced a groundout to end the game 6-4 in favor of the Blue.
Offensively, Wong and Wood each picked up two hits for the Blue while all nine starters each added a hit.
On the mound, Wood got the start for her first outing of the season. The sophomore had a solid performance throwing four innings allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out two. Grundlock picked up the win in relief to move to 7-1 on the season. She threw five innings, giving up three hits, allowed only one earned run and struck out nine batters.
In game two, Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) pitched a gem for Wellesley, throwing six innings while allowing only one hit. The senior did not walk a batter and also picked up 13 strikeouts in the game.
The Blue got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run homerun from Sullivan that scored Alex Warren (Delta, BC).
Ahead 2-0 in the top of the third inning, Wellesley took advantage of two Curry errors that put Coari on third where she was hit home by a groundout from Wong. It was all the offense that Wellesley would need, winning the six-inning game 3-0.
The wins improve Wellesley to 15-5-1 on the season while Curry falls to 13-11 overall.
Up next for Wellesley, the Blue will host MIT in a NEWMAC doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3:30pm.
