WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley softball celebrated today's weather with a sweep of Framingham State, 8-0, 5-0, as Jenna Harvey (London, Ont.) tossed her third no-hitter of the season in the opener and Kristie Gola (Bordentown, N.J.) threw a two-hitter to take the nightcap. The sweep lifts the Blue to 21-5-1 on the season, the program's best record in its four-year history. The Rams fall to 9-16.
In game one, the Blue struck in the bottom of the first, when Ilana Orloff (Weston, Mass.) singled and came around to score on Megan Wood's (Jacksonville, Fla.) single to right. In the second inning, Wellesley scored four more, highlighted by a two-run triple to right center from Alison Davis (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) to take a 5-0 lead.
After a scoreless third inning, the Blue put the game away with three runs in the fourth. Capitalizing on a Ram miscue and singles from Alexandria Coari (Geneva, Ill.), Davis, and Wood, Wellesley extended its lead to 8-0. Harvey fanned the side in the top of the fifth, ending the game with the eight-run rule.
Harvey was overpowering on the mound, allowing no hits, no hits, and striking out 14 while walking only two in five innings of work. Wood and Davis led the Wellesley offense, tallying two hits and two RBI a piece. Andrea DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams, giving up eight runs, five of them earned, in four innings of work.
Wellesley took an early lead in game two, when Meghan Sullivan (Markham, Ont.) led off the bottom of the second with a double to left, stole third, and dashed home on Alex Houghtalin's (Haperwoods, Mich.) single to right. The real damage came in the fifth, when singles from Coari, Amanda Tai (Melrose, Mass.), and Kara Wong (Milford, Mass.) loaded the bases for Shawna McCreadie (Des Plaines, Ill.). McCreadie cleared the bases with a drive over the rightcenter field fence, allowing the Blue to cruise to a 5-0.
Gola was terrific in earning the win, fanning six and taking a no-hitter into the top of the seventh before back-to-back singles from Katelyn Pacheco (Acushnet, Mass.) and DiTerlizzi broke the ice. Kelly Knox (Framingham, Mass.) took the loss giving up 10 hits and five runs.
For the Blue, McCreadie drove in four with her dinger, while Tai, Sullivan, and Houghtalin added two hits each.
Wellesley is back in action at 3:30 on Friday, April 18, when they travel to Wheaton for a key NEWMAC matchup. Framingham State will host Plymouth State on Thursday, April 17, at 3:30 pm.
