Harvey Named NEISCA Player of the Year; Wood Also Honored
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College senior softball player Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) was recently announced as the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) Player of the Year. Harvey, also honored as a first-team All-Star by NEISCA, is joined by sophomore leftfielder Megan Wood (Jacksonville, Fla.) who was named an honorable mention All-Star.
Harvey's Player of the Year nod caps a brilliant career for the pitcher at Wellesley. A two-time NEWMAC Player and Pitcher of the Year selection, she's thrown four no-hitters and has amassed 255 strikeouts this season alone. She finished the 2008 season with an ERA of 0.81 and a 17-5 record.
In four years at Wellesley, Harvey has set career records with 48 wins, 741 strikeouts, 473 innings pitched, 10.97 strikeouts per game and an opposing batting average of .156. She's also thrown six no-hitters during her career, including one perfect game. In the batter's box, Harvey is second all-time in hits (118) and runs batted in (79) and has the fourth highest career batting average (.308) in Wellesley history.
Wood hit .333 this season with 20 runs batted in and a slugging percentage of .551. A two-time All-NEWMAC and All-Region selection, she had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage this season. Only a sophomore, Wood is already climbing the Wellesley record books. Her .364 career batting average is first all-time for a Wellesley player, as is her .420 on-base percentage. She's fifth all-time in career RBI with 32 and is sixth with 75 career hits. Wood's five homeruns in 2008 set a new single-season record for a Wellesley player and put her third on the career list.
Wellesley softball finished its season with a school record 30 wins and ranked #22 in Division III. The Blue finished as the NEWMAC Tournament Runner-Up after winning the regular season title with a 13-3 conference mark. In the NCAA tournament, Wellesley picked up wins over Lesley, Rivier and Bridgewater State but fell to Tufts and regional champion Rhode Island College.
In four years of existence, Wellesley softball has racked up 99 wins under head coach Keri O’Meara.
