Game One Box
Game Two Box

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley sophomore Shawna McCreadie (Des Plaines, IL) belted homeruns in both games of a Blue softball sweep over Smith College in a Sunday afternoon New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Powered by a high-potent offense and two solid pitching performances, Wellesley took game one 8-1 and won game two, 8-0 in six innings.  The sweep moves Wellesley to 19-5-1 overall with a 10-2 mark in the NEWMAC while Smith falls to 8-16, 2-8 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley starter Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) set the tone in game one, striking out the first eleven batters she faced. Harvey finished with a seven inning, two-hit performance racking up 17 strikeouts.

Offensively, Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL) led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field and later came around to score on a single from Meghan Sullivan (Markam, Ontario).  With two outs and Sullivan on base, McCreadie lined a shot over the right center field fence to put the Blue up 3-0.

Wellesley tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of doubles from Harvey and Sullivan and singles from Ilana Orloff (Weston, Mass.) and Alison Davis (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).

Smith got on the board in the top of the fifth-inning when junior Erin Quinn (Northbrook, Ill.) launched a solo homerun that broke up Harvey's no-hitter.  The Pioneer's Laura Robitzek also reached safely in the game, leading off the sixth inning with a double, but was stranded at second.

Wellesley added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame to set the final to 8-1 in favor of the Blue.

In game two, Wellesley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Orloff singled, stroke second and was knocked in on a Kara Wong (Milford, Mass.) single.

Smith threatened in the top of the second inning, loading the bases on a hit batter, a Jessie Paull (Mercer Island, WA) single and a Wellesley error.  After a passed ball, Wellesley catcher Wong threw out Quinn trying to score and starter Beej Grundlock (Blackwood, N.J.) struck out the final battter of the inning to end the threat.

Wellesley stretched the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning after Davis singled and scored on a Wood triple.  Wood came around to score on a double from McCreadie and the Blue added one more on a Smith miscue that scored McCreadie.  Wellesley got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth off of hits from Davis and Wood to extend the Wellesley lead to 6-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, McCreadie ended the game with her second homerun of the day, this one a two-run shot to left center that scored Orloff.

Grundlock picked up the win for Wellesley throwing a six-inning shutout, allowing three hits while striking out nine.

For Smith, Dezarai Fisher (Phoenix, AZ) picked up the loss.  Paull had two hits to lead the Pioneers offense.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, April 16th taking on Framingham State at home at 3:30pm.  Smith will host NEWMAC opponent Clark on Monday, April 14 at 3:30 pm.
