Wellesley Softball Falls to Tufts
Game One Box
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- On a damp, chilly afternoon, Wellesley softball fell victim to a last-inning onslaught from Tufts, losing 9-1 in the opening game of a scheduled double-header. The second game was halted in the second inning due to rain. Wellesley now stands at 13-5-1 on the season. Tufts is now 13-5.
The opening game was a classic pitcher's duel until seventh inning, with Wellesley's Beej Grundlock (Blackwood, N.J.) allowing just one hit and no runs through six innings, while Tufts ace Lauren Gelmetti (Westfield, N.J.) had scattered four hits throughout six scoreless frames.
But the Jumbo offense erupted in the top of the seventh, scoring nine runs on six hits, highlighted by Casey Sullivan's (Berlin, Conn.) two-run single, Alison Drobiarz (Old Saybrook, Conn.) two-run double, and Maya Ripecky's (Chicago, Ill.) three-run homerun.
Wellesley showed signs of life in the bottom of the inning, when Alex Coari (Geneva, Ill.) led off with a single and advanced to third on a double from Alison Davis (Glen Ellyn, Ill.). Coari scored on a sacrifice fly, but Gelmetti ended the rally before it began with her seventh strikeout of the game, earning the 9-1 win.
Game two began promisingly for the Blue as they scattered four hits in the bottom of the first to score three runs. Davis led off with a walk, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Kara Wong (Milford, Mass.) singled, followed by a double off the bat of Megan Wood (Jacksonville, Fla.). Alex Warren (Delta, BC) then grounded to third, scoring Wong. And Shawna McCreadie (Des Plaines, Ill.) singled, driving in Wood to give Wellesley a 3-0 lead.
As weather conditions worsened, play began to deteriorate. In the top of the second, Tufts took advantage of four walks from Jenna Harvey (London, Ont.) to cut the lead to 3-1. During the bottom of the second, after two dangerous plays on the rain-soaked field, umpires halted the game. If both teams find an open date later in the season, play will resume where it left off in the second.
Wellesley returns to action on Wednesday, April 9, at 3:30, when the travel to Curry College for a non-conference double-header. Tufts will host Babson on Tuesday at 2:30.
