Wellesley Softball Sweeps Framingham State

Game One Box
Game Two Box

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Junior Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL) got the win in game one and picked up a save in game two, as the Wellesley College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over non-conference opponent, Framingham State.  The Blue took the first game 10-2, and won the nightcap, 7-6.

Wood pitched seven innings of four-hit softball in the opening game, allowing only one earned run in seven innings of work.  In game two, she notched a relief appearance, getting the last two outs of the game to earn the first save of her career.

Wellesley wasted no time in game one, using six singles in the top half of the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead.  Picking up hits for the Blue were Amanda Tai (Melrose, MA), Jessie Haladyna (St. Johns, FL), Wood, Alex Warren (Delta, BC), Sinta Cebrian (Seattle, WA) and Rachael Goldenberg (Rochester, NY).

The Blue plated two more in the top of the second, capitalizing on a Framingham State miscue that scored Elora Daniele (Belle Mead, NJ) and an RBI groundout from Haladyna.

The Wellesley lead was stretched to 6-0 in the top of the third, as Warren sparked a two-out rally with a single and a stolen base.  After a Goldenberg walk and a passed ball, Daniele hit a deep single to right center to plate both runners.

Framingham State dented the scoring column for the first time in the bottom of 4th inning.  Alyssa Shea (Lakeville, MA), Katie Donovan (Holden, MA) and Rachel Timmons (Malden, MA) each recorded singles to load the bases for Katelyn Pacheo (Acushnet, MA), who picked up an RBI base on balls.  Later in the inning, a throwing error from the Blue catcher scored Donovan to make it 6-2, still in favor of Wellesley.

The Blue added solo runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings to put the game away.  Warren led the Wellesley offense in the 10-2 victory, with a three-hit, two-RBI performance, while Wood and Daniele each knocked in two runs.

For Framingham State, Donovan provided much of the Ram's offense, going 2-3 while Pacheco added the lone RBI. In the circle, Alysia Morrissette (Ware, MA) suffered the loss, throwing four innings allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits. Kristyna Smith (Orleans, MA) pitched well in relief, recording three innings of work allowing just one hit and one run.

Game two started off with the Blue again taking a lead in the top of the first inning. Tai and Megan Townsend (Saline, MI) led off with singles that set up an Ali Davis (Glen Ellyn, IL) triple that plated two runs.  Wood followed with a sacrifice fly that made it 3-0 for the Blue.  After a Warren double, Framingham's Sarah Douillette (Lakeville, MA) forced two Wellesley fly-outs to end the inning.

Wellesley increased the lead in the top of the third.  Davis led off the inning with a walk, while Wood singled up the middle to knock in a run.  A Rams' error moved Wood to third where she was singled home by Warren to make it 5-0 in favor of the Blue.

Framingham responded in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own.  The Rams used singles from Douillette and Ulak and a double from Donovan combined with three Wellesley errors to narrow the lead to 5-4.

Runs in the top of the fifth and the seventh innings pushed the Blue lead to 7-4, but Framingham mounted a late comeback in the bottom of the frame.  Colleen Clancy (Lynn, MA) opened the Rams half of the inning with a single up the middle.  Wellesley pitcher Sarah Sherburne (Mill Valley, CA) then forced a pop out, but Ulak and Donovan hit back-to-back doubles to close the margin to 7-6.  After a pitching change put Wood back in the circle for the Blue, Framingham's Shea and Timmons worked back-to-back walks to load the bases with only one out.  Wellesley picked up the second out of the inning after a failed suicide squeeze caught pinch runner Angela DiSanto (Easthampton, MA) in a run-down at the plate. After a hit batter, Wood forced a foul out to end the Rams threat, and preserve the 7-6 Wellesley victory.

For Wellesley, Warren picked up her second three-hit performance of the afternoon, while Wood was 2-3 with two RBI.  Tai, Townsend, Brittany Bakacs (Millstone Township, NJ) and Goldenberg all recorded two-hit games for the Blue.  Sherburne got the win, throwing six and a third, allowing six runs, three earned, on 10 hits with three strikeouts.  Wood earned the save for the Blue, recording the final two outs of the game.

Ulak, Donovan and Shea all notched two hits for Framingham, while Donovan added three RBI.  Douillette pitched three innings, allowing five runs off of nine hits, suffering the loss for the Rams.  Andrea DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, MA) came on in relief, throwing four innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, on five hits.

The wins improve Wellesley to 13-8 on the season while the Rams fall to 4-20.  Framingham returns to the diamond on April 14th with a MASCAC doubleheader at Salem State beginning at 2:30pm.  The Blue are back in action on Saturday, hosting Springfield in a 12:00pm rematch of last year's NEWMAC tournament final.
