Game 2 Box

WELLESLEY, Mass. – In a re-match of an NCAA Regional game last spring, Wellesley softball hosted Lesley University this afternoon for a non-conference double-header. The visiting Lynx captured the first game 3-2, while the Blue took the nightcap 6-1.  Lesley now stands at 15-10 on the season.  The Blue are 16-12.

In game one, Lesley opened the scoring in the top of the third with a two-out rally.  After Wellesley pitcher Barbarajean Grundlock (Blackwood, NJ) fanned the first two batters of the inning, Lani Cabral-Pini (Wilmington, MA) doubled to left center.  Jenna Fralick (Woburn, MA) walked and Jodi Fralick (Woburn, MA) singled to left, driving in Cabral-Pini.  A wild pitch advanced the Fralick sisters to second and third, and Sarah Wilson plated both of them with a single to give the Lynx a 3-0 lead.

Wellesley got two back in the bottom of the fourth, when Ali Davis (Glen Ellyn, IL), who had tripled in the first, singled to right and advanced to second on Megan Wood's (Jacksonville, FL) fielder's choice.  Wood and Davis moved to second and third on Sinta Cebrian's (Seattle, WA) sacrifice, then scored easily on a double to deep left from Alex Warren (Delta, BC), trimming the lead to 3-2. But Lesley ace Alicia Burnett (Gulf Breeze, FL) slammed the door on the Blue, holding them scoreless the next three innings to secure the win.

For the Lynx, Alyson Durben (Stow, MA), Cabral-Pini, and Wilson collected two hits apiece. Burnett was excellent in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs while fanning seven.  For the Blue, Davis was 2-for-3 with a triple. Elora Daniele (Belle Mead, NJ), Jessie Haladyna (St. John's, FL), and Warren added one hit each.  Despite a solid outing, Grundlock took the loss, giving up seven hits and three runs while fanning 13.

In game two, Wellesley took an early lead, when first-year hurler Sarah Sherburne (Mill Valley, CA) helped her own cause with a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the second inning.  The Blue added to their lead in the fifth, when pinch hitter Brittany Bakacs (Millstone Township, NJ) doubled down the left field line with one out and advanced to third on Daniele's sacrifice.  Wellesley then took advantage of consecutive singles from Amanda Tai (Melrose, MA), Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA), Davis, and Wood to score three runs.  A passed ball allowed Davis to score from third, giving the hosts a 6-0 lead going into the closing innings.

Lesley mounted a rally in the top of the seventh, as Georgia Saltzman (Lynn, MA) led off with a single and moved to third on Gianna Spaziante's (Hawthorne, NY) double.  With runners on second and third with no outs, Cassandra Knox (Sea Cliff, NY), pinch hitting for Ashley Cunningham (Mountain Top, PA), lined out to Grundlock at third and Grundlock doubled up Saltzman to give the Blue two outs.  Chelsea Quackenbush (East Hampton, CT) singled in Spaziante, but Sherburne coaxed a pop fly from the next better to end the inning and secure the 6-1 win.

For Lesley, Cabral-Pini, Saltzman, Spaziante, Quackenbush, and Durben tallied one hit each.  Burnett took the loss, giving up two runs in just one and third innings.  Knox scattered six hits and allowed four runs in 4.2 innings of relief.

Tai and Bakacs led the Blue with two hits each.  Wellesley received a terrific pitching performance from Sherburne, who held the visitors to five hits and one run in seven innings of work, while also notching her first collegiate homerun.

Lesley takes the field again tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, at noon, when they host Becker College. Wellesley will travel to Smith tomorrow for a double-header at noon.
