Softball Advances to NEWMAC Championship with 9-2 Win Over Springfield
Cebrian's Three-Run Homerun Keys Offense for Blue

NEW LONDON, CONN.—(4/25/09)—Sophomore Sinta Cebrian hit a three-run homer highlighting a five-run fifth leading second-seeded Wellesley to a 9-2 win over fourth-seeded Springfield in the winners bracket final, Game #7, of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
Wellesley (21-12-1) advances to the championship game on Sunday at noon, its opponent will have to beat the Blue twice to win the title. Springfield will play in Game # 9 at 10:00 on Sunday morning.
Senior Barbarajean Grundlock , who fired a no-hitter and tied her career-high with 13 strikeouts in Wellesley’s first game of the tournament on Thursday, allowed four hits, two runs, both earned while walking two and striking out 11 to improve to 14-8.
Cebrian’s three-run shot in the fifth gave the Blue a 5-0 lead before a two-run pinch hit double by sophomore Brittany Bakacs which extended the lead to 7-0.
Springfield (17-22) scored its runs in the sixth on a two-run homer by senior Aimee Cassella.
Wellesley had scored twice in the fourth on an RBI double by junior Alex Warren scoring junior Megan Wood, who led off the inning with single. The Blue added a second run on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jessie Haladyna.
Sophomore Alison Davis had a pair of doubles for the Blue while juniors Ilana Orloff , Alex Warren and Wood each had two hits including a double for Wellesley, which finished with 13 hits.
Senior starter Samantha Rhodes (9-10) took the loss for Springfield . She was touched for five runs, four earned in 5 1/3 innings.
