Wellesley College Softball Sweeps Wheaton

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A potent offense led the Wellesley College softball team to a doubleheader sweep against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival, Wheaton College on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue took game one, 9-1 in five innings, and then won the nightcap, 6-1.
The Blue run their season record to 16-4, while improving to 8-2 in the NEWMAC. Wheaton falls to 13-11, 1-7 in NEWMAC play.
In game one, Wellesey benefited from a huge first inning, as the Blue knocked out six hits and scored six runs. Jessie Haladyna (St. John's, FL) led off the game with her third homerun of the season, while Sinta Cebrian (Seattle, WA) and Samantha Spiga (Perth Amboy, NJ) each added RBI. Mara Blesoff (Oak Park, IL) drove in two runs with a double to left center, while Wellesley got another run on a Wheaton miscue to pad a 6-0 advantage.
In the Wellesley half of the fourth, the Blue added another run on an RBI bunt single from Ilana Orloff (Weston, MA) that scored Haladyna.
Wheaton broke through on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, cutting the Wellesley lead to 7-1. Megan Roy (North Dighton, MA) led off the inning with a walk and was advanced to second on a single from Emily O'Connell (Kennebunk, ME). Amanda Drury (Tolland, CT) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners a base, before Roy came home on a wild pitch. Wellesley's Taylor Yamauchi (Honolulu, HI) then picked O'Connell off of third to end the Lyons threat.
Wellesley ended the game in the fifth inning, plating two more, to set the mercy-run final to 9-1. Cebrian led off the inning with her first homerun of the year, while Blesoff singled home pinch-runner Yamauchi, who reached on a Spiga single, to end the contest.
The Blue were led by Blesoff who finished game one, 2-2 with three RBI, while Cebrian was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI. Megan Wood (Jacksonville, FL) picked up her fifth win of the year for Wellesley, throwing five strong innings, giving up four hits and one earned run.
Wheaton was paced by O'Connell who went 2-2 while Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT) and Amanda Poplaski (North Reading, MA) each added hits. Lesley Warn (Portland, ME) suffered the loss, throwing 4.2 inning, giving up 11 hits and nine runs, eight of which were earned.
In game two, Wheaton took an early lead in the second inning. Rachel Merrick (Methuen, MA) led off the inning with a walk and was advanced to second by a sacrifice bunt from Brittany Calarese (Norwood, MA). After a groundout advanced Merrick to third base, she scored on a wild pitch, giving the Lyons a 1-0 lead.
Wellesley answered back in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Megan Townsend (Saline, MI) opened the inning with an infield single, while Brittany Bakacs (Millstone Township, NJ) put runners on first and second with a single to left field. Wood then drove home two runs with a single to left field that put the Blue in front, 2-1. After Wheaton starter Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA) forced a pop out and worked a strike-out, Blesoff struck for a two-out single that scored Wood and gave Wellesley a 3-1 advantage.
The Blue tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to make it 6-1. Haladyna was hit by a pitch and then stole second to set up Townsend, who singled up the middle for an RBI. Townsend advanced to second on a passed ball and was advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Wood then launched a homerun into centerfield to set the score to 6-1 in favor of the home team.
Wheaton threatened in the top of the seventh, as Poplaski led off with a bunt single and then stole second. Wellesley hurler Lauren Goldfarb (Albequerque, NM) benefited from her defense as Cebrian turned a double play to clear the bases. A single from Katy Salka (Ayer, MA) and a walk from Valerie Tratner (Forest Hills, NJ) kept things alive for Wheaton, but Goldfarb forced a line out to end the game and complete the Wellesley sweep.
Wheaton's game two offense was limited to singles from Poplaski, Hunt, Salka and O'Connell. Bagley took the loss, throwing six inning, allowing eight hits and six earned runs, while striking out four.
Wood led the Blue going 2-3 with four RBI, while Townsend went 3-3 with two runs and an RBI. Blesoff added an RBI for Wellesley. In the circle, Goldfarb got the win, running her season mark to 8-2. She allowed just four hits and one earned run, while striking out three.
Wheaton is back in action tomorrow, playing a 3:00pm doubleheader at Endicott College. Wellesley continues its homestand tomorrow with a 3:00pm doubleheader against local-rival, Framingham State.
