Wellesley Squash Earns 2009 Chaffee Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Wellesley College squash coach Wendy Berry and the Wellesley squash team were honored with the 2009 Clarence Chaffee award at the recent Howe Cup National Championship.

The award is given to the coach whose team has demonstrated the qualities of competitiveness and court demeanor that characterized Clarence C. Chaffee, former Williams College coach who began the Ephs program in 1938.  The honor is based on sportsmanship, teamwork, character, work ethic and improvement.

In just their second year as a reinstated varsity program, Wellesley squash battled injuries throughout the entire season, finishing with three wins in 2008-09. Although playing without the last two spots on the ladder for several matches, the Blue finished the season, competing at the Howe Cup and finishing 31st in the country.

Donated by the Williams women's squash team, the Chaffee award is voted on by the coaches of each member institution, this year totaling 43. This year marks the second time that a Wellesley coach has won the award since it began in 1987.
