Wellesley Volleyball Defeats Mount Holyoke, 3-0
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College women’s volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium. It was the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener for both squads and marked the 21st straight time that the Blue have defeated the Lyons. With the win, Wellesley improved its record to a perfect 8-0. Mount Holyoke dropped to 3-2.
Senior outside hitter Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, U.K./Saline) and sophomore outside hitter Casi Schwisow (Bellevue, Wash./Issaquah) recorded nine and seven kills, respectively, to pace Wellesley. The Blue also received a boost from senior libero Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif./Villa Parks), who totaled 14 digs and four service aces. Sophomore setter Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) accumulated 24 assists.
Mount Holyoke was paced by senior outside hitter Chelsea Tracy (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles), who collected nine kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Kateryna Kuc (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins) finished with 16 assists and seven digs, while senior libero Kathryne Schwartz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) registered 14 digs. Rounding things out for the Lyons was senior middle blocker Brenna Shepherd (Pottstown, Pa./Westtown School), who chipped in with four kills.
Both teams will face off against NEWMAC foes on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (3-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) will visit Clark University, while Wellesley (8-0, 1-0 NEWMAC) will entertain Springfield College.
