Match 1 -- Wellesley Remains Unbeaten with 3-0 Win Over Eastern Connecticut
WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley volleyball kept its unbeaten streak alive this evening with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University. The Blue stand at 5-0 on the season. ECSU drops to 2-3.
Set one was an evenly matched affair, with Eastern and Wellesley trading sideouts until Eastern took a 13-12 edge halfway through the game. At 18-18, the Blue sided out on a kill from Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) and scored six of the next seven points with strong serving from Madeleine Brumley (Lafayette, La.) to take a 25-19 win.
The second set was all Wellesley, as they tallied 13 kills and only one error en route to a 25-10 victory. Eastern regrouped and began set three as they had set one, taking a 2-0 lead and trading sideouts with Wellesley to an 11-11 tie. But the Blue used solid ball control to break the game open, scoring 14 of the next 17 points to take the set 25-13.
Molly Rathbun (Hebron, Conn.) led Easter with seven kills, while Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, Conn.) chipped in five. Taylor Abelli (Cheshire, Conn.) and Sandra Jaques (Milford, Conn.) tallied 14 and 11 digs, respectively, and Jen Braswell (Wilton, Conn.) distributed 16 assists in the loss.
Cummings once again led the Blue offensively, notching 12 kills. Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) tallied 8 kills and Samantha Du (Houston, Texas) added seven. Duff led all diggers with 17, as Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) and Cummings chipped in 16 and 15. Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) dished out 31 assists in the win.
The Blue are back in action tomorrow at 10:00am against Amherst College and return to the court at 2:00pm against Middlebury. Eastern will play Middlebury at 12:00pm and close out the quad tournament at 4:00pm, when they face Amherst.
WELLESLEY, Ma. -- Amherst College maintained its perfect record this evening with a 3-0 win over Middlebury College (25-16, 25-17, 25-16) in the second round of the Wellesley College Quad Tournament. The win lifts Amherst to 5-0 on the season. Middlebury drops to 0-1.
The teams matched up evenly during the first half of set one, trading sideouts until Amherst took an 11-10. The Lord Jeffs then used two four-point serving runs -- one from setter Sara Heller (La Canada, Calif.) and one from defensive specialist Erin Camp (Santa Monica, Calif.) -- to put the game away 25-16. Amherst maintained the momentum, cruising to a 25-17 win in the second game and securing straight-set victory with a 25-16 win in game three.
Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the Jeffs with 10 kills each. Heller tallied 26 assists in the win, while Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, Calif.) led all diggers with 20. Middlebury was led by Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) with eight kills and Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, Colo.) with seven. Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) distributed 19 assists in the loss.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow at 10:00am, when they face unbeaten Wellesley College. The Jeffs will close out the tournament with a 4:00 match versus Eastern Connecticut. Middlebury will play Eastern Connecticut at 12:00pm, followed by Wellesley at 2:00pm.
Wellesley Volleyball Remains Unbeaten, Downing Amherst 3-0
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- In a battle of unbeaten teams this morning at Wellesley College, the Blue overpowered Amherst College in straight sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20. The win lifts the Blue to 6-0. The Lord Jeffs drop to 5-1.
Amherst jumped out quickly in set one, taking a 12-7 lead behind strong play from libero Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, Calif.) and setter Sara Heller (La Canada, Calif.). The squads traded sideouts to 22-22, before Wellesley's Madeleine Brumley (Lafayette, La.) served three straight points to seal a 25-22 win.
The Blue jumped out early in set two, taking a 4-0 advantage and gradually extending the lead to 16-10. The Jeffs made a charge, cutting the lead to two, but Wellesley held on for a 25-19 victory and a two-set lead.
Amherst grabbed the momentum early in game three, taking a 6-2 edge in the opening rallies of the set. But Wellesley answered with a nine-point serving run from libero Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) to take a 14-8 lead. The Blue never looked back, cruising to a 25-20 win to take the match 3-0.
Heller captained the Jeffs' offense, distributing 27 assists to her teammates. Hannah Wirth (Pacific Palisades) notched eight kills and two blocks to lead Amherst at the net, while Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Claire Holton-Basaldua (San Rafael, Calif.) added six kills a piece. Yorke paced the Jeffs' defense with 15 digs.
Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) led the Blue in kills with 15 and digs with 17. Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 11 kills, while middles Samantha Du (Houston, Texas) chipped in seven. Setter Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) guided the Blue attack, dishing out 40 assists in the win.
The Blue return to action later today, when the face Middlebury College at 2:00 p.m. Amherst will close out the Wellesley Quad Invitation with 4:00 p.m. match against Eastern Connecicut.
Middlebury Sweeps Eastern Connecticut, 3-0
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Middlebury College downed Eastern Connecticut, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18), in the fourth round of the Wellesley Quad Tournament. The win lifts the Panthers to 1-1 for the season. Eastern Connecticut falls to 2-4.
The Panthers' Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) led Middlebury with nine kills, while Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, Colo.) and Caroline Codle (Atlanta, Ga.) added six kills each. Natalie DuPre ( Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 19 digs. Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) guided the offense with 30 assists.
Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, Conn.) led Eastern Connecticut with eight kills and two blocks, while Rachael Joy (Huntington Station, N.Y.) added four kills and Alexandra Silvetros (North Brandford, Conn.) chipped in three. Taylor Abelli (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied 20 digs in the effort, and Jen Braswell (Wilton, Conn.) dished out 15 assists.
Eastern Connecticut returns to the court on Tuesday, September 16, when they face Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Middlebury will play on Tuesday as well, when they travel to St. Michael's for a 7:00 p.m. match.
Wellesley Moves to 7-0 With Sweep Over Middlebury
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley volleyball closed out its Quad Invitational with a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-22) win over Middlebury College. The Blue now stand at 7-0 on the season. Middlebury drops to 1-2.
Middlebury jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set one, but Wellesley rallied to take a 9-8 advantage. The Blue extended its lead to 17-12 and held on to take the first set 25-22. Wellesley maintained the momentum in set two, stretching an early 6-3 lead to a 19-15 edge late in the game. But the visiting Panthers capitalized on four straight Wellesley serving errors to tie the game at 24-24 before the Blue closed out the set with two straight points.
In set three, Middlebury once again jumped out early, inching to a 12-10 lead. But Wellesley's Madeleine Brumley (Lafayette, La.) served four straight points, giving the Blue a 15-12 lead. Wellesley held on to take the game 25-22, sealing the straight-set victory.
The Panthers' Jane Handel (Evanston, Ill.) led Middlebury with 12 kills, while Lindsay Patterson (Aspen, Colo.)added five kills. Natalie DuPre (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 18 digs, as Lauren Barrett (Medfield, Mass.) dished out 27 assists.
Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) led the Blue at the net with 15 kills and three blocks. Alice Cummings (Tallahassee, Fla.) tallied 12 kills, while Samantha Du (Houston, Texas) added nine. Heather Mellquist (Baltimore, Ohio) was also strong at the net, notching five kills on nine attempts with no errors. Mellquist, who has moved from the outside to the middle this season, was solid all weekend, racking up 10 kills on 24 attempts with zero errors, to go along with five blocks. Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, Calif.) guided the Wellesley offense, distributing 41 assists among five different hitters, while Emily Peters (Temescal Valley, Calif.) tallied 25 digs in the match.
Wellesley takes the court on Tuesday, September 16, when they travel to Mount Holyoke for a conference match-up. Middlebury returns to action on Tuesday as well, when they travel to St. Michael's for a 7:00 p.m. match.
Amherst Sweeps Eastern Connecticut, 3-0
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Amherst closed out a long weekend of volleyball with a 3-0 sweep over Eastern Connecticut. The Jeffs extend their record to 6-1 on the season. The Warriors fall to 2-5.
In the opening set, Amherst scored early and often, vaulting to a 13-4 lead on its way to a 25-6 win. Eastern re-grouped and kept the second game closer, but the Jeffs' overpowering offense proved to be too much as they cruised to a 25-16 win. The Warriors took an early 7-3 lead in game three, but Amherst tied the game at 11-11 and used a five-point run to take a 16-11 advantage. The Jeffs held on for a 25-17 win.
Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led Amherst with 10 kills. Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, Calif.) and Alison Munzer (Los Angeles, Calif.) added nine and eight kills, respectively, while Kate Jordan (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) tallied 20 assists in the win.
Sandra Jaques (Milford, Conn.) led the Warriors with seven kills, as Kristianna Ibsen (Shelton, Conn.) chipped in six. Jen Braswell (Wilton, Mass.) notched 18 assists in the effort.
Eastern Connecticut returns to the court on Tuesday, September 16, when they face Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Amherst returns to action on Friday, September 19, at 8:00 p.m., when they face Colby in the first round of the NESCAC quad match at Bates.
