Founding Darshana

The Hindu Community at Wellesley is a dynamic, diverse, and an active religious group on campus. The students in the group learn, practice, share, and exchange their knowledge of Hinduism based on their unique experiences and perspectives amongst a receptive and nurturing community.

Darshana was formed by a small group of students in the spring of 1996. In Sanskrit, an ancient language of India, the word "Darshana" means "a vision," both literally and metaphorically. It is also the Sanskrit word for "philosophy” as understood in the western world. Hindu philosophy has specific aims, such as living one’s life by Dharma, which leads one to liberation and freedom from the cycle of birth, life and death. The goal of Darshana is to inspire all its members to protect and preserve the Hindu religion. Each member is encouraged to explore the sacred Vedas and apply these truths to their daily lives and practices.
