Wellesley Field Hockey Rallies to Defeat Babson in Overtime

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Wellesley College field hockey team rallied from a 2-0 defecit to defeat Babson College, 3-2, in overtime Tuesday night at MacDowell Field in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

The Beavers led 2-0 until the final five minutes when Wellesley scored two goals in 41 seconds to force the game into overtime.  Wellesley junior Callie Lekas (Brewster, Mass.) scored the game-winner six minutes into the first overtime to bring the Blue to victory.

The game remained scoreless until three minutes left in the first half. The Beavers gained momentum when first-year goalkeeper Jessica Pashos (Winchester, Mass.) took away Wellesley’s best scoring opportunity when she made a high stick save and gave Babson possession. The Beavers  got the ball down to their offensive end and scored in the 32nd minute when sophomore Sarah Fredlund (New Preston, Conn.) passed the ball to teammate Jess Paladino (Turner, Maine) for a one-timer into the back of the cage.

Paladino struck again in the second half when she received the ball from teammate Colleen Kelly (Milton, Mass.) at the top of the circle and took a direct shot into the corner of the cage. The Beavers kept the lead until the 65th minute when Wellesley sophomore Sally Scudder (Delafield, Wis.) tipped the ball in off a deflection from teammate Whitney Reid (Bensalem, Pa.). The Blue tied the game just 41 seconds later when Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) scored off a rebound, sending the match into overtime.

Wellesley got the only scoring opportunity of the overtime period when they were awarded a penalty corner in the 76th minute.  Sophomore Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) inserted the ball to teammate Katie Sang (Cupertino, Calif.), who stick stopped the ball at the top of the circle. Lekas was then able to blast a direct shot past the Beaver defense and into the cage for the game-winner.

With the win, the Blue improves to 9-4, 5-1 in the NEWMAC, while the Beavers are now 10-7, 4-3 in the NEWMAC. Babson returns home Thursday evening as they take on Western New England College in a non-conference match at 6 p.m. Wellesley takes on Clark in a NEWMAC matchup Saturday at 1 p.m.
