Wellesley Field Hockey Downs Clark, 3-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley field hockey team used a strong first half to defeat NEWMAC rival Clark, 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Wellesley. The win improves the Blue to 10-4 overall with a 6-1 conference mark while Clark falls to 5-10 and 1-6 in NEWMAC play.
Wellesley took a 1-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play off of a goal from sophomore Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME). Frett knocked home a deflection from teammate Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) on a penalty corner for her seventh score of the season.
The Blue scored again in the 30th minute when Cushing sent a pass to Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) on a penalty corner. Scudder scored to put the Blue in front, 2-0, with her ninth goal of 2008.
Wellesley would add one more score with 27 seconds left in the first half, converting a direct penalty corner for a 3-0 lead. Dana Trail (Trappe, PA) inserted the ball to Katie Sang (Cupertino, Calif.), who stopped the ball at the top of the circle for Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) who sent a shot into the goal for her team-leading 10th score of the season.
Clark's best chance to score came in the 53rd minute of play when the Cougars had three shots on goal. Alison Foley's (Arlington, VA) shot was saved by Wellesley keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) while Anne Marie DiMatteo (Belmont, MA) shot hit the post. Megan Lennon (Charlton, MA) had one last chance for the score, but Wellesley's Becca Leclerc (Avon, CT) picked up her second defensive save of the day to maintain the 3-0 lead for the Blue.
Neither team managed a second-half goal and the game ended 3-0 in favor of Wellesley. For the game, the Blue out shot the Cougars, 32-9.
In goal for Clark, Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, NY) had a busy day picking up 15 saves. Wellesley's Hewitt stopped four, picking up her sixth shutout of the season.
Wellesley is back in action on Tuesday with a conference match-up against Wheaton at 3:30pm while Clark travels to MIT for a 6:00pm NEWMAC game.
