Lekas Nets Hat Trick in Wellesley Win Over Gordon

WELLESLEY, Mass. --  Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) tallied a hat trick as the Wellesley College field hockey team defeated visiting Gordon College, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Lekas gave the Blue an early 1-0 lead after she converted a penalty stroke just 8:32 into the game.  The junior forward pushed the Wellesley lead to 2-0 just over eight minutes later, scoring unassisted.  The Blue out shot Gordon, 7-1 in the first half and took the 2-0 lead into the break.

The Fighting Scots got on the board in the 43rd minute when Mollie Sweeney (South Hamilton, MA) scored on an assist from Alison Vigneau (Stowe, VT) that cut the Wellesley lead to 2-1.  However, Wellesley answered back with a goal from Dana Trail (Trappe, PA), assisted by Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) that put the Blue back out in front by two goals.

Wellesley added an insurance score with :20 left in the game as Lekas completed the hat trick. For the game, the Blue out shot the Fighting Scots 24-4 including a 17-3 advantage in the second period.

In goal for Gordon, Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, NY) picked up six saves while Wellesley's Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) stopped two shots but remained mostly untested.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday, September 20th.  Gordon will travel to Newport, RI to play Salve Regina while Wellesley will host an Alumnae game at 12:00pm.
