Wellesley Field Hockey Defeats Mount Holyoke, 4-0

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) scored twice while Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) and Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) each added goals as the Wellesley College field hockey team posted a 4-0 win over visiting New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Mount Holyoke on Saturday morning.

Scudder tallied the only goal of the first half when she took a pass from Molly Morrow (Duxbury, MA) and scored from the right side a little over 14 minutes into the game.

After the Wellesley goal, Mount Holyoke controlled much of the first half, holding an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners and a 10-7 advantage in shots. However, Wellesley keeper Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) picked up six saves and made a brilliant stop on a penalty stroke from the Lyon's Anne Doton (Woodstock, VT) to keep the Blue ahead 1-0.

Frett added to the Wellesley lead 13 minutes into the second half when she sent home a shot after a rebound from a penalty corner. Scudder then increased the Blue advantage to 3-0 with a an unassisted goal at
60:44.

Down by three, the Lyons turned on the pressure over the next eight minutes, racking up five penalty corners and four shots. After a shot on a penalty corner pulled Wellesley's Hewitt out from the net, Doton launched a shot that was saved by the Blue's Becca Leclerc (Avon, CT). Leclerc then sent the ball up the field where Wellesley ended up with a two-on-one attack and Whitney Reid (Bensalem, PA) tipped a beautiful pass to Cushing who scored her third goal of the season and set the game's final score to 4-0.

Lyon keepers Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, MI) and Kate Gibson (Charlotte, NC) split time in net with Walsh picking three saves while Gibson stopped seven. For Wellesley, Hewitt ended the day with a nine-save shutout.

Mount Holyoke (5-3, 1-1 NEWMAC) will return home to face Smith College in a 7:00pm conference match-up on Tuesday. The Blue (5-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) are back in action on Thursday with a non-conference game at Endicott College at 4:00pm.
