Wellesley Field Hockey Advances to NEWMAC Semis with Win Over Mount Holyoke
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Wellesley College field hockey team advanced to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Semifinals with a 4-1 win over visiting Mount Holyoke on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue to 11-5 overall while the Lyons end their 2008 campaign with a 9-7 record.
Mount Holyoke opened strong, taking the first six shots of the contest, but Wellesley's Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) picked up three saves by the 12 minute mark to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
The Blue dented the scoring column in the 23rd minute off a penalty corner as Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) scored on an assist from Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) to put Wellesley ahead 1-0. Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) extended the Blue advantage with eight seconds to play in the half, scoring off of a rebounded save that gave Wellesley a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The Blue took a 3-0 lead just four minutes into the second half when Scudder took a pass from Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) and found the back of the net for her second goal of the game and 11th of the season.
Wellesley finished it's scoring at the 66-minute mark when Lekas scored her 12th goal of 2008 on Frett's second assist of the game, for a 4-0 Blue lead
Mount Holyoke got on the board just over a minute later with Mary Kate Switchenko (Sturbridge, MA) scoring off an assist from Anne Doton (Woodstock, VT) that set the score to 4-1. However, the Lyons would get no closer as the Wellesley defense held on for the 4-1 victory.
Kate Gibson (Charlotte, NC) picked up four saves in goal for the Lyons while Wellesley's Hewitt made six stops in the victory.
Wellesley will travel to Springfield on Saturday for the Semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament. The Blue will take on second-seeded Wheaton in a 1:00 match-up.
