Wellesley Field Hockey Downs New England College

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. --  The Wellesley College field hockey team defeated the New England College Pilgrims, 2-1, on Saturday in Wellesley’s home field. The game was tight, with both teams pushing up to their respective circles and creating multiple corner situations.

The first twenty-five minutes of the game were scoreless. Both sides were given multiple corner opportunities, but at 26:11 the Blue seized on the opportunity and found a hole in New England College’s tight defense. Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) scored the first goal of the game with an assist by Whitney Reid (Bensalem, PA).

New England turned it up at the half, controlling the midfield and keeping the ball inside Wellesley territory until the 58-minute mark when Marissa Ayotte scored a goal for the Pilgrims to even the score at 1-1.

Wellesley answered back with a quick goal to once again take the lead. The Blue pounded up the field converted a penalty corner from Reid to Dana Trail (Trappe, PA).  Trail was able to punch the ball into the net at 59:52 and the Blue were able to hold off the Pilgrims 2-1.

Both goalkeepers kept their teams in the game with steady play between the pipes.  For NEC, Mary Roux picked up six saves while Blue goalie Emily Hewitt notched eight on the game.

New England College is now 5-1, and Wellesley moves to 1-2. The Blue return on Wednesday for a home match against Gordon College at 4:00 p.m.
