Wellesley Gets Past Wesleyan For 1-0 Victory
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley College first-year Whitney Reid scored her first collegiate goal Wednesday to lead Wellesley over visiting Wesleyan University, 1-0. The non-conference contest pushes the Blue to 3-2 on the season and drops the Cardinals to 1-4.
Wellesley controlled the action for much of the game, putting heavy pressure on the Wesleyan side and outshooting the Cardinals 22-6 in a fast-paced, intensely physical 70 minutes. Neither team found the net in the first half, coming up against strong defense on both ends of the field, and Wellesley's Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) and Wesleyan's Breen McDonald (Shaker Heights, OH) went largely untested.
The Blue seized momentum for good in the second half, racking up 15 shots and ten penalty corners and relentlessly challenging the Cardinal defense, but early in the half couldn't capitalize on their scoring chances to break the scoreless tie. Finally, with 8:57 remaining in regulation, Reid (Bensalem, PA) converted a penalty corner to send Wellesley ahead 1-0. The Blue defense, notably led by senior Becca Leclerc (Avon, CT), continually cleared out the Blue end to preserve the slim margin.
Hewitt made six saves in recording her first shutout of the season. McDonald posted nine saves in the loss.
The Blue return to action on Saturday, September 27, when they travel to Smith College for a 1:00 p.m. NEWMAC matchup.
