Frett Scores Twice in Wellesley Field Hockey Win Over WPI

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) scored twice as the Wellesley field hockey team defeated NEWMAC rival WPI on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. With the win, the Blue remained unbeaten in conference play with a 4-0 record (8-3 overall) while WPI falls to 8-5 with a 3-2 mark in the NEWMAC.
After a scoreless first half that saw Wellesley outshoot WPI 15-0, the Blue got on the board when Frett scored off of a rebound from a Whitney Reid (Bensalem, PA) attempt, just over nine minutes into the second stanza.
Wellesley increased the lead to 2-0 when Frett scored at the 49-minute mark, this time off of deflection from Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) for her sixth goal of the year. Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) rounded out the scoring for the Blue with an unassisted tally in the 60th minute that gave the junior her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
For the game, the Blue outshot the Engineers 35-0.
WPI junior goalkeeper Betsy Ray (Simsbury (CT) was busy in net, facing 35 shots on the day and recording 17 stops. Senior Maggie Elbag (Rutland, MA) added a defensive save for the Engineers.
In goal for Wellesley, senior Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) went untested in 70 minutes of play, picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
Wellesley is back in action on Saturday against Springfield in a battle of NEWMAC unbeatens. WPI will travel to Salve Regina in a non-conference match on Thursday at 4:00pm.
