Lekas and Morrow Score Two Each as Wellesley Field Hockey Downs Babson

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Seniors Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) and Molly Morrow (Bown NH) each scored a pair of goals to lead the Wellesley College field hockey team to a 4-2 NEWMAC victory over cross-town rival, Babson College.  Wellesley improves to 10-6 overall, with a 5-1 conference mark, while Babson stands at 9-6, 4-3 in the NEWMAC.

Lekas scored the only goal of the first half for either team at the 10:16 mark.  A Whitney Reid (Bensalem, MA) attempt was saved by Babson's Jessica Pashos (Winchester, MA) and Lekas followed the rebound with a shot into the back of the net, giving Wellesley a 1-0 advantage.

Lekas struck again just over two minutes into the second period after a blocked shot from the stick of Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) rebounded in front of the senior.  Lekas then launched a line drive over the stick of Pashos to give Wellesley a 2-0 lead with 32 minutes left to play.

Babson dented the scoring column at 49:15 to cut the lead to 2-1.  A slick pass from Colleen Kelly (Milton, MA) at the top of the circle found Jess Paladino (Turner, ME) who knocked in her team-leading 16th goal of the season.

After Paladino's goal, Babson turned on the pressure, recording a series of five shots and three penalty corners in a three-minute span.  However, Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) came up with four key saves to keep the game at 2-1 in favor of the Blue with 12 minutes remaining.

Morrow then gave Wellesley a 4-1 lead, scoring back-to-back goals at 60:48 and 61:43.  The first was off a penalty corner from Dana Trail (Trappe, PA) while the second came unassisted on a bullet from the left side of the circle that found the right corner of the Babson goal.

The Beavers would cut the Wellesley advantage to 4-2 on a Kelly penalty stroke with 4:07 remaining, but Wellesley held on for the victory.

For Babson, Pashos finished with seven total saves while Sawyer recorded eight saves for Wellesley.  Also for the Blue, Morrow and Sarah Mohtes-Chan (Davis, CA) each tallied defensive saves.

Babson returns to action on Thursday hosting Connecticut College in a 4:30pm non-conference clash.  Wellesley is off until Saturday when the Blue travel to Clark for a key NEWMAC match-up beginning at 1:00pm.
