Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to Defending National Champions

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Visting Bowdoin College recorded a 7-0 win over the Wellesley College field hockey team on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The win, the first of the season for the two-time defending national champions, evens the Polar Bear record to 1-1, while the Blue stand at 2-1 in 2009.

Despite a quick onslaught of shots from Bowdoin to start the game, Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) picked up seven saves in the first 10 minutes of play to keep the game scoreless.

Bowdoin wouldn't be held down for long, as Jessie Small (Wayne, PA) picked up her first goal of the season at the 10:53 mark. The goal, assisted by Ingrid Oelschlager, sparked a streak of five unanswered goals from the Polar Bears in the first half.

Katie Herter (Topsfield, MA) recorded two first half goals, while Shavonne Lord (Shrewsbury, MA) and Megan McCullough (Springvale, ME) eached scored to give Bowdoin a 5-0 advantage at the break. The Polar Bears racked up 27 shots in the first 35 minutes, while Sawyer totaled 12 saves in the half.

Bowdoin added two more insurance goals in the second half to set the final to 7-0.  Herter completed her hat trick at the 41 minute mark, off of an assist from Lord, while McKenna Teague (Cohasset, MA) set up Cathleen Smith (Larchmont, NY) on the final tally of the evening.

In goal for the Blue, Sawyer faced 44 shots while recording 21 saves.  For Bowdoin, Emily Neilson (Chatham, PA) got the win, picking up three saves.  Kayla Lessard (Enfield, CT) played the final 10 minutes, saving one shot.

Wellesley is back in action on Thursday with a 4:30pm home match-up against Trinity.  Bowdoin is off until Saturday when the Polar Bears open conference play with an 11:00am home game vs. Bates.
