Box Score
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Wellesley College field hockey team (6-3) to a 3-1 victory at Connecticut College (3-3) Wednesday.
Connecticut College had won six consecutive games in the longstanding New England rivalry with five of their victories being decided by a single goal.
Senior Kelsey Fredericks (Nantucket, Mass.) contributed a first half score for the Camels. Bizzie Dow (Lake George, N.Y.) assisted on the goal.
Wellesley took control of the game with two quick strikes in a span of 1:16 at the end of the first half. The Blue converted on a corner with 2:55 remaining. Allison Robbins (Bennington, Vt.) played a ball into Trail, who scored the equalizer. Wellesley took the lead for good with 1:39 to play. Junior Sally Scudder (Delafield, Wis.) drove to the cage and created a two-on-one situation. Cushing was situated in the slot and cycled the ball over to Reid on her wing, who buried the one-timer from close range.
The Camels held a 12-to-6 shot advantage in the first half. But Wellesley carried the play for most of the second half, holding a sizable 16-to-3 edge in shots. Cushing added an insurance goal with 26:14 remaining and the visitors were able to hold on to the 3-1 win.
Junior net-minder Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, Ill.) made 11 save in the victory for the visitors. Steph Quinn (Arlington, Mass.) collected 14 of her 17 saves in the second half of action. On the heels of her 13 save effort against Amherst Saturday, Quinn was honored Tuesday by Womensfieldhockey.com on the web site’s weekly honor roll.
Both teams will return to action Saturday afternoon. Wellesley will visit Mount Holyoke College for a 1:00 p.m. game in South Hadley. The Camels will host Bowdoin College for a 2:00 p.m. game in New London.
