Four Wellesley Players Score in Field Hockey Win Over Gordon
Box Score
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A balanced offensive attack led the Wellesley College field hockey team to a 4-1 win over Gordon College on the road on Saturday. Wellesley starts the 2009 season at 1-0, while the loss drops Gordon to 0-3.
Wellesley took a 1-0 lead in the middle of the first period, when junior Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) set up classmate Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) on a penalty corner. Scudder's score, the only goal in the first half for either team, sent the Blue into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Wellesley increased the lead to 2-0 when senior Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) converted a penalty corner at 45:35. Ten minutes later, rookie Emily Lewis (Weston, CT) picked up her first collegiate goal off of an assist from sophomore Amy Richardson (Bensalem, PA).
The Blue added another score with eight minutes remaining in the game with Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) scoring on a penalty corner to give Wellesley a 4-0 lead. Gordon would get on the board a minute later, with a goal from Samantha Neverett, assisted by Veronica Pierce, but Wellesley held on for the 4-1 win.
Junior Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) was strong between the pipes for the Blue, picking up six saves in her first career start. For Gordon, Alicia L'Heureux stopped seven in the loss.
The Blue are back in action on Wednesday with a 4:00pm game at New England College. Gordon next plays on September 10th when they travel to the University of Southern Maine for a 4:00pm start.
