Morrow Scores Twice in Wellesley Field Hockey Win at MIT
Box Score
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) scored twice, with both goals coming off of penalty corners, as Wellesley College handed MIT its second straight defeat, 5-1, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday. The Engineers ledger drops to 9-4 (1-3 NEWMAC) while the Blue now stand at 8-5 and are unbeaten in NEWMAC play at 3-0.
Wellesley opened up an early lead as Sally Scudder’s (Delafield, WI) shot deflected off the stick of an MIT defender, giving the Blue a 1-0 lead just 2:51 into the game. Morrow’s first goal would come 11 minutes later. After receiving the penalty corner insert from Dana Trail, Morrow’s blast from the right side again ricocheted off a charging defender and into the back of the net.
Morrow added another tally early in the second half with an assist by Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA). Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) and Emily Lewis (Weston, CT) each knotched unassisted markers as the Wellesley lead swelled to 5-0. Molly McShane and Katie Kauffman hooked up late to help the Engineers avoid the shutout.
Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) made six saves in net for the Blue to earn her eighth win. Keri Dixon was credited with the loss while stopping three shots for Tech.
For the game Wellesley held a 19-14 advantage in shots. The Blue also earned seven corners against just three for MIT.
The Engineers travel to Daniel Webster College next, on Wednesday, October 14 for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Wellesley will play at WPI in a NEWMAC match-up on Tuesday, also at 7:00 p.m.
