Field Hockey Defeats Smith in First NEWMAC Game

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- A balanced scoring attack helped propel Wellesley to a 7-1 victory over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.  The game marked the first NEWMAC conference game for both teams.

Wellesley got out to a quick first half lead on a shot by Whitney Reid (Stamford, CT) at the 7:47 mark. Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) added another goal for Wellesley off an assist from Molly Morrow (Bow, NH).  Emily Lewis (Weston, CT) then assisted Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) to give the Blue a 3-0 advantage. Smith brought the score to 3-1 as Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) got past Wellesley goalie, Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL), to score an unassisted goal on an open net just before the end of the half.

Despite a late first half rally from Smith, Wellesley added four goals in the second half of action to seal the victory.  Molly Morrow (Bow, NH) struck first with a goal off an offensive rebound. Scudder added another goal two minutes later. First years Natalie Gitz (Oxford, OH) and Lewis each scored to finish out Wellesley's scoring attack.

Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer recorded 2 saves, as a strong Wellesley defense limited Smith to just 6 shots on goal.  Junior Sarah Mohtes-Chan (Davis, CA) recorded a defensive save in the contest, marking her fourth in the last two games. In the Smith goal, Senior keeper Margaret Winter was kept busy with 51 Wellesley shots.  She recorded 21 saves in the contest. Wellesley improves to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC conference. Smith falls to 2-4, 0-1 NEWMAC.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, September 30 at Connecticut College at 4:30pm. Smith plays their next game on Saturday, October 3 at Babson College at 12:30pm.
