Third-Ranked Tufts University Defeats Wellesley Field Hockey

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Eight different goal scorers led the third-ranked Tufts University field hockey team to 9-0 victory over host Wellesley College on Tuesday afternoon.  The Jumbos remain a perfect 8-0 on the season, while Wellesley falls to 7-4.

Tufts found the back of the net early and often, outshooting Wellesley 18-3 in the first half.  The Jumbos got scores from Margi Scholtes (Grosse Pointe, MI), Amanda Russo (Garden City, NY), Michelle Kelly (Dowingtown, PA) and Jess Perkins (Barrington, RI) all within the first 24 minutes of play to take a 4-0 lead at the half.

The second half featured more of the same heavy offensive attack from Tufts.  Melissa Burke (Walpole, MA) opened up the scoring just two minutes into the period, picking up a goal off of a nice pass from Lindsay Griffith (Wilmington, DE) on the left side of circle.

Tufts took a 6-0 lead at the 45-minute mark when Russo scored her second goal of the game, and her seventh of the season, on a breakaway.  The Jumbos would score three more over the final 15 minutes of play with Lia Sagerman (La Jolla, CA), Kerry Eaton (Norfolk, MA), and Missy Karp (Berwyn, PA) all picking up goals to end the game 9-0 in favor of Tufts.

Tufts keeper Marianna Zak (Concord, MA) went largely untested in 51 minutes of work.  Back-up Katie Hyder (Winston-Salem, NC) picked up four saves, playing the final 19 minutes of the game.   Wellesley keeper Sarina Sawyer (Wilmette, IL) made 14 saves for the Blue.

Wellesley is back in action at home on Thursday hosting Endicott in a 4:30pm non-conference match-up.  Tufts is off until Saturday, hosting NESCAC opponent, Colby, at 1:00pm.
