Lekas Nets Game-Winner in Overtime as Wellesley Downs Vassar

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Wellesley scored the first and last goals of the game as the Blue defeated Vassar 2-1 in the opening game of the 2009 Seven Sisters Field Hockey Classic.

The Blue found the back of the cage first as Sally Scudder (Delafield, WI) deflected a Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) shot to Wellesley a 1-0 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first-half.

In the second-half, Vassar’s Jordan Friedmann (Chicago, IL) tied the game as she took a Maura McCarthy pass and beat Wellesley’s goalie, Sarina Sawyer (Wilmete, IL), to the near post.

Back-and-forth play by both teama ran the remaining twenty-eight minutes of regulation off the clock. Both teams had the many opportunities to score but were unable to punch the ball into the cage.

In the first overtime period, Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) carried the ball into the circle and sent her shot right by Rachel Clarkin-Breslin for the win.

Pacing the Blue’s offense was Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) and Lekas with five shots apiece. Sawyer posed nine saves en route to the victory.

For Vassar, Katy Hwang took a game-high seven shots while Friedmann took three. Clarkin-Breslin stopped 16 Blue shots on the afternoon

Wellesley outshot Vassar 22-17 while holding a slim 10-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Wellesley improves to 3-2 on the season as the Brewers fall to 1-5. The Blue are back to action tomorrow when they take on Bryn Mawr at 10:00 am as Vassar will play Smith later in the day at 2:00 pm.
