MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan's Morgan McCauley scored the first of her two goals in the contest just 4:01 into the second half to break a 1-1 tie, and later added the insurance marker with 12:07 remaining to secure a 3-1 win for the Cardinals over visiting Wellesley.
Despite the loss, Wellesley continues to lead the all-time series with a 12-7-1 advantage.
McCauley cashed in on a shot in close near the right post after a good rush by junior Lila Creighton got the ball into the scoring circle. Her second goal through a bit of traffic in front following a Wesleyan penalty corner was assisted by senior Alex David.
Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead when David redirected a feed into the circle by freshman Ashley McLaren only 39 seconds into the contest. The lead held until just 2:40 remained in the opening half. At that time, junior Katie Frett knocked home her third goal of the season set up by a penalty corner and feed to the middle by senior Molly Morrow.
In the Wellesley goal, junior Sarina Sawyer was kept busy by 24 Wesleyan shots. Sawyer recorded 15 saves while junior defender Sarah Mohtes-Chan had three of Wellesley’s four defensive saves in the ballgame. Wesleyan netminder freshman Tori Redding posted three saves as Wellesley was limited to six total shots.
