WELLESLEY, Mass. – The visiting Amherst College volleyball team posted a three-set victory over Wellesley College on Friday evening at the Keohane Sports Center. The match was the season opener for the Lord Jeffs (1-0) and the home opener for the Blue, who fall to 0-2 in 2010.
Amherst opened the match with a 25-15 victory in the first set, as Wellesley was hampered by nine errors, posting a negative hitting percentage. The second set was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lord Jeffs again coming out on top, this time by a 28-26 score. Wellesley started strong in the third, but Amherst ran away with the set, recording a 25-18 win to take the match, 3-0.
Wellesley's offense was led by nine kills from sophomore Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach, CA) while classmate Taylor King (Walnut Creek, CA) added six. Junior Amanda Duritsch (Troy, OH) added five kills, while sophomore Isabel Custodio (Powell, OH) registered five kills and 17 assists.
Cristy Meier led the Lord Jeffs offense posting 11 kills, while Laura Hyman had an impressive outing with seven kills in nine attacks with no errors, hitting .778 on the evening.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Amherst completed a sweep at the Wellesley volleyball tri-match, posting a 3-0 victory over NESCAC-rival Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
Amherst took the first set 25-18 to ahead 1-0 in the match. The second set was a marathon affair, with Amherst finally nabbing a 33-31 victory. In the third and final set, Amherst posted a 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.
For the Lord Jeffs, Katherine Kanoff posted nine kills, while Laura Hyman and Jackie Berkley each recorded eight. Rachel Yore and Erin Camp each picked up 28 dig and Callie Neilson added 28 assists. Christy Meier was the blocks leader with two solos and two assists.
Wesleyan was led by Casey Reed who tallied 12 kills with 22 digs. Alissa Santucci recorded eight kills, while Laura Yim dished out 35 assists. Also for the Cardinals, Ruby Hernandez picked up 21 digs and Monica Leslie added two blocks.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley Volleyball grabbed its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-19) win over Wesleyan University in the final match of the Wellesley volleyball tri-match. The win lifts the Blue to 1-2. Wesleyan starts its season 0-2.
Wellesley broke to a 12-8 lead in the opening set enroute to a 25-17 win. The Blue took an early lead in the second game as well, but the Cardinals charged back to tie the score at 19-19 before Wellesley hung on for the 25-22 win. Wesleyan edged to 9-7 lead in game three, but Wellesley closed the gap and broke away to a 14-10 advantage as they cruised to the straight-set win.
Monica Leslie (Newton, MA) and Casey Reed (Manhattan Beach, CA) hammered nine kills each to lead the visitors at the net. Alissa Santucci (Syosset, NY) and Ruby Hernandez (West Palm Beach, FL) tallied 11 and nine digs, respectively, while Laura Yim (San Mateo, CA) distributed 26 assists in the loss.
For the Blue, Elizabeth Campbell (Solona Beach, CA) notched her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 20 digs. Isabel Custodio (Powell, OH) and Kaitlin Bradshaw (Wexford, PA) added seven kills each, while Julia Adams (South Pasadena, CA) chipped in six. Defensive specialists Allison Li (Los Angeles, CA) and Traci Hamanka (Burbank, CA) recorded three aces and two aces, respectively, while Custodio and Victoria Peng (Diamond Bar, CA) combined for 26 assists.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, September 15, when they host Keene State in a 7:00pm non-conference match-up. The Blue will take the court on Tuesday in their NEWMAC opener, with a home match against Smith College at 7:00pm.
